Casualties of the Battle of Appomattox Court House are buried in a small Confederate cemetery just outside the town. At the end of the row of Confederate graves stands one unknown Union burial, marked by a US flag. Enemies in their last moments, their deaths opened the door for Lee's surrender and the ultimate end of war.
